I can remember back in 2008 when I first started researching working at home topics and having everyone look at me like I had 3 heads. Okay I get it, it seemed skeptical to them. But what did they know? They never once looked into it or tried to use their computer as a money harvesting machine. Well maybe not money harvesting, but I think you get the picture.
More and more mothers want to stay home and raise their children, especially mothers who have kids with special needs. Some people cannot find a offline job that suits their needs and then there is others that believe their going to get rich in a week. First of all you are not going to be getting rich in a week, working at home takes time and effort and sometimes even some cash to start up whatever your doing. But that is the key word here what “you” are doing. You are the only one who can stir this new destiny into the right direction.
Working at home doesn't mean your going to be self employed unless you choose to be. There are tons of working at home employee jobs but most are customer service and will require phone work and a quiet setting. Most people with kids say no to this right away because of having children. And if your like me with no real office space to work from its a big no. There are non phone jobs though, they just are sometimes harder to find.
The big question though of why working at home is becoming so popular is also the fact it has become a huge trend these days. The last outside job I worked for did offer work at home but there was no way I could do it and I had planned on quitting that job anyways so it didn't really matter all that much. I am not a fan of call centers or customer service work over the phone. I would be much happier doing customer service through email or chat support. And yes this does limit my options greatly.
Working at home is great for employers though as it means in some cases one less computer to maintain among other things. For the employee its great to though because the employee can save money on fuel, clothing and even work meals.
I think the biggest thing though is the commute to work that makes people flock to online work. In some cases yes there is the whole picking your hours or working for yourself, which is great. I remember a time when I had no car and I would cab to my job most days. But tried to walk in the summer, it was a long walk. I was spending about $200.00 a month in transportation, to work and to the grocery store. Luckily I have a car now but back then, that seemed like a lot of money going out to go to my job.
My car is hardly turned on these days so I need to make a point on winter days to go start it up if its not going to be moving for a few days. In the years to come I think working at home is going to continue to get popular. Some people only want to do it part time and maintain their outside job which is fine, might as well have more income streams, right? What is your take on it, is working at home getting more popular? Feel free to post about it in the comments if you wish.
